About this Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Retrieval Nursing Director, as the Flight Nurse Manager in Alice Springs, you will actively contribute as a member of a collaborative Flight Nursing Leadership Team.
You will be responsible for leading, developing and resourcing the Flight Nursing team to ensure the provision of safe, kind and effective patient care.
Specifically, you will:
- Monitor and support the flight nursing team to maintain & develop their knowledge and skills in aeromedical nursing.
- Use expert clinical knowledge, experience and continuous quality improvement to lead clinical service delivery.
- Monitor, measure and report patient outcomes and experiences, and ensure key performance indicators are met in relation to service delivery and patient experience
- Lead investigations and follow-up of incidents and/or safety concerns using SQR management
- Maintain financial accountability for the flight nursing budget at the Alice Springs base
- Monitor and manage flight nurse resourcing to ensure adequate staffing and lead recruitment campaigns to support a fully recruited workforce
About You
You are:
- An experienced leader with outstanding communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- An individual who leads by example and fosters workplace environments that develop and enhance a workplace culture and staff potential
- A strong relationship builder who can work within a multi-disciplinary team and has a thorough understanding of cross-cultural diversity
- A Registered Nurse with at least 5 years post registration experience
Registered Midwife qualification is highly desirable.
To be considered for the role you require:
- Registration or you are eligible for Registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds or is eligible to hold a current practicing certificate.
- A post graduate qualification in Emergency or Critical Care Nursing

Description
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) is offering midwifery scholarships to suitably qualified Registered Nurses with a background in critical care. As part of the scholarship program, nurses will receive financial assistance of up to $10,000 as they pursue the midwifery qualification required to become a Flight Nurse for RFDS. The Midwifery Scholarship is generously donated by the Dalara Foundation and the Maureen Stevenson Foundation.
Who are we looking for?
You are an adaptable, resourceful, and skilled critical care nurse who is highly committed to your patients. You are confident in applying your hard-earned experience in an unique and autonomous environment outside of a hospital setting across a variety of presentations. As part of your application, you will be able to demonstrate:
- Registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse
- At least three years experience in a critical care environment in either a recognised major regional or tertiary hospital Emergency Department, with 24-hour in-department medical coverage and/or a recognised Intensive Care Unit; and
- Evidence of an application or acceptance into a relevant midwifery course commencing in 2025 or be currently enrolled in a midwifery course with completion due in 2025; an
- A commitment to work at any RFDS (Queensland Section) base within 12 months of successful completion of your midwifery studies and registration as a Midwife with AHPRA; and
- Valid working rights for Australia

Before commencement as a Flight Nurse, successful candidates must undergo a drug and alcohol test and possibly a medical assessment.
